IN THIS ISSUE: In the News Agent Insider New Releases Read A Good Book Lately?

Message from Kristin Nelson
Kristin Nelson
It’s October–the month of baseball playoffs, Halloween, rain, and royalty statements. At least here at the Nelson Literary Agency, October (and April) are our biggest statement periods. About two-thirds of our statements come during these accounting months.

So we have royalties on our minds. If you are a published author, you need to really analyze your statement. Ask for pertinent information such as your initial print run, subsequent reprints, number of copies destroyed or held in reserve, and any licensing income. All this info is necessary for evaluating the accuracy of your statement. And if you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact your agent. That’s part of the job description.

We strongly recommend the caring and feeding of royalty statements; we find errors in our statements in almost every cycle. Always in the author’s favor.

Best,

Kristin Nelson

It’s fall now, and tis the season to start wrapping up loose ends before the holidays. Sure, there is always more to do but it’s also nice at this time of the year to be able to sit back a little and enjoy the fruits of our labor. This month our successes include some really fabulous reviews for our authors whose books have been flooding the shelves all summer. It’s a pleasure to share these with you — may your season be filled with equal amounts of happy news!

THE SHIFTER Janice Hardy’s debut novel THE SHIFTER is in bookstores right now. Even before this book was released, we were celebrating an uncanny amount of buzz and excitement. For example, Kirkus has already reviewed THE SHIFTER and they had wonderful things to say! Congratulations Janice!

“A teen with the power to shift pain from one person to another chooses between saving her sister’s life and her principles in this first of a projected series. Orphaned when the Baseer invade and occupy Geveg, 15-year-old Nya and her sister Tali live in an oppressed world where pain is controlled by a Healer’s League that trains “Takers” to transfer human pain into a substance called pynvium. The League charges to remove pain, pain merchants buy pain to enchant weapons and anyone able to “shift” pain is subject to “death, prison, maybe even experiments.” Nya suppresses her shifting power until Tali and other League apprentices mysteriously disappear and a pain merchant threatens to make her a pawn in his plot to subvert Geveg. In the tradition of strong-willed adventure heroines, Nya rallies, unleashing her powers as she faces complex moral dilemmas. Her first-person narration is suffused with the agony of deciding who will live or die. Timely ethical exploration in the guise of high-action fantasy.”

THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS with THIS WICKED GIFT Courtney Milan is a debut author whose first novel, PROOF BY SEDUCTION, hits the shelves in January. Before that release, she was invited to include a novella in an anthology which came out this month. The anthology is called THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS and Courtney’s piece is called THIS WICKED GIFT.

And, here’s to Happy Holidays! THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS came out of the gates running and hit the USA Today Bestseller List its first week! Congratulations Courtney — how exciting!

VAMPED According to the School Library Journal website, they are, “the world’s largest reviewer of books, multimedia, and technology for children and teens.”

We are thrilled to share a review that they did recently on Lucienne Diver’s VAMPED. This novel was released in May and has been enjoying tremendous success all summer as a “fun and campy” spin on the vampire novel for young adults.

“This quick read is filled with teen slang and fashion consciousness; it’s a lighthearted, action-packed, vampire romance story following the vein of Julie Kenner’s “Good Ghouls” (Berkley)…”
--School Library Journal

From the back cover of VAMPED:

Gina Covello’s Perks and Pitfalls of Vamp Life:
1. Hello?! Eternal youth and beauty!
2. Free. Designer. Clothes.
3. My hot new boyfriend Bobby went from chess dud to vamp stud.
4. No reflection! First order of business: turn my own stylist to stop the spiral from chic to eek.
5. Vampire vixen Mellisande has taken an interest in my boyfriend, and is now transforming the entire high school into her own personal vampire army. If anyone’s going to start their own undead entourage, it should be me!

I guess it’s up to me to save everyone from fashion disasters and fanged fate!

GIVE UP THE GHOST Here’s another great Kirkus magazine review to share. These are extra exciting because Kirkus tends to be very selective in its praise. The reviewers loved GIVE UP THE GHOST — Megan Crewe’s debut young adult novel released in September. Congratulations Megan!

“…a poignant character study of a deeply wounded girl moving toward a nuanced, forgiving view of humanity. Crewe’s first effort will make readers wonder what else she’s got up her sleeve.”
--Kirkus

From the flap copy of GIVE UP THE GHOST:

Cass McKenna much prefers the company of ghosts to that of the living. Who needs lying, backstabbing, breathing friends when ghosts are uncomplicated and completely dependable? Plus, the dead know the dirt on just about everybody . . . and Cass loves dirt.

She’s on a mission to expose the dirty little secrets of all of the poseurs in her school (everyone, in her mind). But when the vice president of the student council finds out her secret, Cass’s whole scheme hangs in the balance. Tim wants her help contacting his recently deceased mother, and Cass is less than enthusiastic. But Tim’s pleas seem genuine, and Cass reluctantly agrees to try.

As Tim’s desperation to talk to his mother’s spirit grows, Cass, kicking and screaming, finds herself becoming more and more entwined in his life. And she’s more surprised than anyone when she realizes that maybe, just maybe, some living people aren’t so bad if she’d only give them a chance. . . .

NOT QUITE A HUSBAND It’s always nice to see our established authors continuing to receive attention too! Sherry Thomas’s third book NOT QUITE A HUSBAND was released in May to outstanding reviews. And those reviews keep rolling in! Congratulations Sherry!

“If you want to read Sherry Thomas's third novel, Not Quite a Husband, choose a moment when you have some time to yourself, because this is a book not so much to devour, but to savor at leisure, like a glass of excellent wine ... Sherry Thomas writes in a beautifully evocative, luscious style that had me return to several passages to savor them once more. Her descriptions make you see the places and smell the smells, and each love scene is delightfully sensuous and most satisfyingly illustrative of the way the characters' relationship has developed… Not Quite a Husband has everything I want from a romance (well, except a map ...): Delightful but flawed characters I love and can identify with, luscious prose, an interesting setting, and a romance that touches my heart. I can't recommend it enough, and am looking forward very much to Sherry Thomas's next book.”
--Rike Horstmann, All About Romance

From the back cover of NOT QUITE A HUSBAND:

Their marriage lasted only slightly longer than the honeymoon–to no one’s surprise, not even Bryony Asquith’s. A man as talented, handsome, and sought-after by society as Leo Marsden couldn't possibly want to spend his entire life with a woman who rebelled against propriety by becoming a doctor. Why then, three years after their annulment and half a world away, does he track her down at her clinic in the remotest corner of India?

Leo has no reason to think Bryony could ever forgive him for the way he treated her, but he won’t rest until he’s delivered an urgent message from her sister–and fulfilled his duty by escorting her safely back to England. But as they risk their lives for each other on the journey home, will the biggest danger be the treacherous terrain–or their rekindling passion?

DON'T JUDGE A GIRL BY HER COVER Ally Carter’s New York Times Bestselling Gallagher Girls series continues to dominate in sales and publicity. The most recent installment DON’T JUDGE A GIRL BY HER COVER spent three weeks on the Children’s Series New York Times Bestseller list along with Twilight and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Not to mention, it also spent two weeks on the Publishers Weekly Children’s Series Bestseller list.

Here is a starred review of this award-winning book from the Voice of Youth Advocates. Congratulations Ally!

“The joy of reading the newest Gallagher Girl adventure is offset only by another mysterious, cliffhanger ending. These girls remain the most awesome, kick-butt teens ever, but now readers are also getting a glimpse at what makes them vulnerable. Cammie’s family story, both past and present, is deepened with the appearance of her Aunt as Macey’s personal Secret Service Agent. A few more tidbits about Zach’s story are thrown in to keep Cammie–and the reader–guessing. This reviewer loves the series, enjoyed this book, and is struggling to wait for the next one.”
-- Stacy Hayman, VOYA starred review

From the back cover of DON’T JUDGE A GIRL BY HER COVER:

When Cammie “the Chameleon” Morgan visits her roommate Macey in Boston, she thinks she’s in for an exciting end to her summer break. After all, she’s there to watch Macey’s father accept a nomination for vice president of the United States. But when you go to the world’s best school (for spies), “exciting” and “deadly” are never far apart. Cammie and Macey soon find themselves trapped in a kidnapper’s dangerous plot, with only their espionage skills to save them.

As her junior year begins, Cammie can’t shake the memory of what happened in Boston, and even the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women doesn’t feel like the safe haven it once did. Shocking secrets and old flames seem to lurk around every one of the mansion’s corners as Cammie and her friends struggle to answer the questions, Who is after Macey? And how can they keep her safe?

Soon Cammie is joining Bex and Liz as Macey's private security team on the campaign trail. The girls must use their spy training at every turn, as the stakes are raised, and Cammie gets closer and closer to the shocking truth...

TIPS FROM THE SLUSH PILE by Sara Megibow Sara Megibow
This is more of a marketing tip than a query letter tip, per se. Still, I find this to be an important step for all writers who take the business of publishing seriously. Before starting your submissions (whether to agents or directly to editors), make sure your web presence is polished and up-to-date. I know, I know — another thing to “polish” but believe me, it’s important. If I am reading sample pages that I like, the very first thing I do BEFORE asking for the full manuscript is a Google search for your website. Hopefully, you’ve included the url in your query letter but if not, I go on a hunt. No, it’s not a deal breaker if you’re not 100% web savvy, but I consider websites, blogs, etc., to be a part of the package, a part of the “resume,” so to speak. And, yes — I take it seriously.

1) If you don’t have an author website yet — get one. And get a professional one. Even if it’s a basic template, make sure it looks professional and has professional content on it.

2) If you don’t have an author blog, think seriously about starting one. Right now, blogging is a hot way to increase your own marketing. Next year maybe it will be something different, but for now, a great blog is #2 behind a great website. A few suggestions ... avoid blogging about how the book is going (i.e., avoid entries like this, “I wrote 80 pages today — yippee!” or “I am on chapter 10 and it’s giving me problems.”) The general masses aren’t going to read your blog and want to come back again and again to find out about your writing progress. Instead, have a hook or a spin to your blog. Is your book a Scottish Highland romance? Then, maybe your blog hosts some really fabulous in-depth information about Scottish clans and their histories! Also, at all costs, avoid blogging anything negative about your submission process (i.e., "so-and-so agent was SOOO rude" = oops.) This business is too small and interrelated to risk a blog entry like this - even if it was true.

3) Consider other social networking sites, but if you do — make them professional! My husband is a musician and he has had tremendous success with marketing through Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and youtube.com. So, check them out and see if they are right for you and if you have time to keep them up-to-date. If you go this route though, remember that agents and editors will probably take a look — so nix the drunken bikini shots from your last beach vacation. It’s a bummer, I know, to lose that kind of privacy and freedom. And, it’s just my opinion, but if you treat all these things like your resume instead of like your personal photo album, it’s a stronger professional representation of who you are.

4) Check out what other successful authors are doing. If all this information feels overwhelming, spend a few afternoons seeing what other people do, what kinds of information they post, what kinds of pictures, what kinds of questions they answer and what kinds of “spins” or “hooks” they use. Two great places to start — www.allycarter.com and www.sarahreesbrennan.com.

Sincerely,

Sara Megibow

WHAT’S HOT by Kristin Nelson
If one editor emails me about an interest, I make note, but I certainly don’t think it’s a candidate for making my newsletter entry for what’s hot. However, when I get two emails from two different editors from two different houses mentioning that they are looking for narrative nonfiction with heart (along the lines of DEWEY), then I’m willing to include it.

So that’s what editors are looking for as of late. And who can blame them? Animal stories are burning up the bestseller charts. And heartwarming is always good as we enter the holiday season.

THE SHIFTER SHIFTER by Janice Hardy

Nya is an orphan struggling for survival in a city crippled by war. She is also a Taker–with her touch, she can heal injuries, pulling pain from another person into her own body. But unlike her sister, Tali, and the other Takers who become Healer’s League apprentices, Nya’s skill is flawed: She can’t push that pain into pynvium, the enchanted metal used to store it. All she can do is shift it from person to person, a dangerous skill that she must keep hidden from forces occupying her city. If discovered, she’d be used as a human weapon against her own people.

Rumors of another war make Nya’s life harder, forcing her to take desperate risks just to find work and food. She pushes her luck too far and exposes her secret to a pain merchant eager to use her shifting ability for his own sinister purpose. At first, Nya refuses, but when Tali and other League Healers mysteriously disappear, she’s faced with some difficult choices. As her father used to say, principles are a bargain at any price; but how many will Nya have to sell to get Tali back alive?

THE STORY BEHIND THE SALE by Kristin Nelson
Oh, I’ve been waiting to tell this story! If you are a regular Pub Rants blog reader, then you’ve already heard this, but if you aren’t, then here’s a great tale about signing a client from a conference – the Surrey International Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, to be exact.

Janice had a ten minute pitch appointment. I’ve done hundreds of these over the years (without necessarily signing an author on as a client), so I didn’t have any particular expectation when Janice sat down across from me. But then she told me the title for her project – which was originally named The Pain Merchants. I was immediately intrigued and listened closely to her pitch. I asked for sample pages right then as well. After Janice exited the pitch area, I emailed Sara and asked her to be on the lookout for these pages. I wanted to read them as soon as they hit our electronic database.

In fact, I read them on the plane home from the conference via my Kindle. Soon after I gave her a call and signed Janice as a client. We went on to sell her trilogy for six figures. THE SHIFTER is the start of the Healing Wars series.

That was one great conference!

And in case you were wondering why the title changed, neither the US BN or Borders would carry a middle grade book with the word “pain” in the title. Whatever. Janice’s UK publisher kept the original title.

KRISTIN’S BOOK CLUB
My book club is meeting in two weeks and this time we’ve chosen the nonfiction title
BLINK: THE POWER OF THINKING WITHOUT THINKING by Malcolm Gladwell. Why did we settle on this title? Actually, for a practical reason. Several of our book club members already own the paperback but hadn’t had a chance to read it yet. In these tight economic times, it made sense to go with a title folks already had or could get easily from the library.

So, for November, we are reading about the snap judgment in a blink – a trait I imagine that most writers would prefer agents not use when reading their query letters. Grin.

ON SARA’S NIGHTSTAND
Last year while on vacation, I read
MOON CALLED by Patricia Briggs. I enjoyed it so much that I sent my husband out at 10 p.m. to get the sequel for me (BLOOD BOUND). It’s a fun memory — me, sitting up in the hotel room trying to finish a good book while reading under the covers and trying to keep our toddler asleep. Then, right before all the bookstores in the area closed, I sent him out on the urgent I-must-read-more errand. I went on to read the whole series during that vacation and really enjoyed the unique take on the vampire/werewolf/shapeshifter story. So, when MOON CALLED came out this summer in graphic novel format, I went out and got a copy right away.

The graphic novel is called HOMECOMING and it’s beautiful! Of course, there were some scenes from the book that I missed (and some that were changed), but I really enjoyed being able to see the beautiful pictures and the powerful creatures come to life. If you’re up for reading an old favorite in a new format, try graphic novels — they can certainly be worth the adventure!
