A Message from Kristin Nelson

Grounds For Firing

Kristin Nelson

Just recently a client of mine told me an appalling story, one that is definitely worth sharing with you. I’m going to give you the moral of the story first: Your literary agent should never act contrary to the best interest of your career as an author. Ever. Period. If an agent does, you should fire that person.

Here’s what happened. A writer received her final publishing contract ready for signing. She was surprised to see that a non-compete clause had been added, a clause that wasn’t included in the previous drafts of the agreement.  This new clause prohibited the author from digitally self-publishing in any way, shape, or form. When the writer asked about the clause, the agent admitted to requesting that the publisher include it in the final contract. The reason? The agent wanted to be protected from losing income if the author chose to self-publish anything on her own.

I have no idea if this author took action, but in my mind, that is definitely grounds for firing. And it’s another good reason to read your final publishing contract before you sign it.
