PubRants First Blog Reader Poll Or Something Equally Unscientific

 203 Comments |  Share This:

STATUS: I’m getting my 80s groove thing on to start the week. How can you be upset when listening to nostalgia music like this?

What’s playing on the iPod right now? THE LOOK OF LOVE by ABC

So this morning I’m breezing through my copy of Publishers Weekly as we had just found out our author Sherry Thomas was getting a new PW review for her August release DELICIOUS (and a fab review at that!). I was pretty sure it was coming in the current issue that hasn’t hit my mailbox yet but to make sure, I scanned the latest copy.

Well, this article caught my eye. Zogby International, in conjunction with Random House, did a survey on current readership. Here’s the link if you want to read it more fully.

And here are just a few eye-popping stats from this poll.

82% of Readers prefer the hard copy of a book over the electronic version (Oy! I’m in the minority. I love reading on my Kindle.)

43% of readers go into bookstores looking for a specific title

77% of those readers make additional purchases when looking for a specific book

52% of book purchasers are swayed by cover art

49% of book purchasers are swayed by reviews

35% of book purchasers have been swayed by a cover quote (now my authors understand why we work so hard to get those cover quotes!)

60% of book purchasers are swayed by recommendations from friends or family members.

Word of mouth is everything!

Alas, I didn’t see any stats on back cover copy and whether that influences a purchase. That could have been relevant concerning all my recent blog posts regarding it.

But let’s do our own, not-so-scientific and spur of the moment sample poll:

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

How many books do you buy in a year?

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

I’ll compile our own totally unscientific stats tomorrow or on Wed.

    Hi Ms. Nelson
I actually had a quick question unrelated to your poll (sorry!).
I emailed a query about a month ago, and I know you’ve been super busy catching up so I was just wondering if it got lost in the shuffle or if I should wait a little while longer?
    Thanks!

I am in the 82%. I prefer hard copy to electronic. It’s harder to cuddle my laptop in bed.

I sometimes buy a second title after going into a bookstore for a specific item. If I’m at my discount bookstore, I *USUALLY* buy a second or third title than if I got the book at B&N and I had to pay full price.

I’ve bought a book at least once due to a cover, but I don’t think it was a good book because I haven’t done it since. Other factors must play before I purchase now.

I’ve bought MANY books due to cover copy. Though occasionally this has been misleading and I’ve now had to add the “read the first page” or “read page 69” tests to it before buying someone new.

I have bought most of books lately due to word of mouth recommendation. Though in some cases it’s taken 5-10 times of being recommended before I’ve conceded, if the genre is out of my norm.

I don’t think I’ve bought books that you’ve recommended; however, I do buy books of clients you represent. (I love Leslie!)

I probably buy about 20-40 books a year (not all fiction, about 1/3 research/writing books.)

I probably borrow 200+ books a year from the library. Many times if there is a book I read there that I think is a keeper I will go out and buy it after.

Hard copy — but I will buy a Kindle when they fix/update a few things. I think it’d be great for travel.

Yes, always a second (or third) title!

    No, not on cover alone.

No, not based on back cover copy.

60% of the time I buy based on the recommendation of a friend, family member or another writer, the other 30% would be familiarity with the author or interest in that particular genre/subject matter.

ALLY CARTER’S books — previewed by me for my daughter. I LOVED them so much I’ve recommended them to mothers of other preteen and teen girls.

I buy about 30 to 40 books a year. At least. More some years and a lot more if you count my kids. I also make full use of the library and if I LOVE a book go out and purchase it.

I check out at least 100 books from the library a year. I try to read them all but it’s not always possible.

I prefer hard copy. Sometimes it’s the book as artifact and comfort object thing; sometimes it’s because I need to gloss the book with my own marginalia. When I work, I always ask for both a hard copy and an electronic copy of the text.

I almost always buy more than one book at a time.

Although a beautiful cover can get me to pick something up, it doesn’t seal the deal. I also pick up books with ugly covers–I buy them less often, but ugly can be eye-catching.

I think that I bought “The Name of This Book is Secret” because of the back cover copy; it’s hard to sort that influence out from the compelling nature of the title, though.

Rarely. Usually if someone closely connected to me wants me to read a book, they give it to me.

    No. Sorry.

    It’s a book a week or a little more.

    I check out 20 or 25 books a year. My six-year-old checks out 1 or 2 a week.

(One thing about beautiful covers: Lately I have noticed that there are many beautiful covers featuring young women’s backs, usually dressed in period clothing. My initial reaction was “OOO pretty!” but now it is starting to creep me out. Why isn’t the head part of the picture? What has become of her legs, her hands? I can’t remember the fairytale classification number, but the archetype of the girl without hands seems to be in play.)

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

    Hard copy, no question.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

*laughs* Every time, without fail. In fact, I know from experience to save up my pennies – a trip to the bookstore usually results in five or six books.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

A couple of times. The funny thing is… I didn’t like the book each time, and so only repeated the experiment once.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

    YES. A thousand times, yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Only sometimes; I will go and LOOK at a book based on recommendation, then make up my own mind based on a quick peruse and the back-cover copy.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Off-hand, I’m honestly not sure; I can say that every time you mention a book, I go look it up to find out more.

How many books do you buy in a year?
I have absolutely no idea. A lot.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
Shamefully, none. The reason is actually simple: If I like the book, I want to own it, and I’m going to buy it anyway. If I don’t like the book, I’m either going to return it for another one, give it to a friend who might like it, or donate it to said library. Usually the latter. (This led to a stack of vampire books going to a Mormon temple’s library once, but that’s another story.)

    A poll!

I prefer hard copy to electronic–it’s much easier to annotate text, and as a Grad Student, I NEED to write in my books! Plus, e-book readers and bathtubs just don’t mix …

When I go to the store to buy a particular book, I often end up with at least one more book (often for each of the three kids plus hubby), depending on the finances at the time.

Book based on cover alone? Only Terri Windling’s Fairy Tale Series.

On back cover copy? Yes–when I know the author.

    Friend or family–HELL YES!!!

How many books in a year–for ME, at least 24 (I know, but I’m poor and many of these books cost over $35). For the family–at least 50.

Books from the library–last semester, I had 40 books checked out at one time. That doesn’t count the ten or so books I checked out, decided I couldn’t use, then returned. Next semester should be worse (three papers to write instead of two).

Hard copy – but that could change. As technology advances I could be persuaded to try a new format. (I’m waiting for the Kindle to get a touch screen at least).

When going into a store to buy a book I come away with other purchases about 40% of the time.

Much to my disappointment I have purchased a book based on the cover alone…won’t make the same mistake again.

Back cover copy often inspires me to crack the book and read the first few pages which is where I decide whether the book is worth a purchase.

I almost never buy a book based upon a friend or family’s recommendation (although I will pick it up at the library)

I picked up Sherry Thomas, Linnea Sinclair, and Jana DeLeon based upon your enthusiastic recommendations.

    I purchase 50-60 books a year.

I check out from the library around 40-50 books a year.

Rarely – I have specific tastes.
Afraid not, sorry Kristin! I do like Carolyn Jewell though and I know she’s yours.
Ouch – honestly? Probably over 75 but I’ve never counted. A better question would also be how many did I buy and ultimately finish reading. That’s a sad statistic. 🙂

Yes, I’ve bought based on cover art alone.

Yes, I’ve bought based on the back cover copy. That’s what I look at second – first the cover, then the back cover/jacket flap copy. I *never* read the first page or so to decide if I like it. Cover and copy all the way for me, unless I’ve heard about it from other sources and am there specifically to buy the thing.

I have bought several books based on freinds’ or family’s recommendations, but mostly I like to browse the covers and flaps.

I don’t think I’ve bought a book mentioned on this blog yet. You did mention one that I’m looking forward to reading when it comes out (not published yet). But I pay attention, and lots of the books I read come from mentions on agent/publisher/librarian blogs.

I buy maybe five per year, the rest I check out of the library.

My library card is smoking, I check out so many books in a year. I literally have my library card number memorized so that I can place holds on books through my library’s online service. Some are for research for my writing, some are to keep up on what’s being published, lots are for pleasure alone. Currently I have 3 checked out and five on my hold list – one of which I found at Andrew Karre’s Flex blog and which was recently reviewed on the bookshelves of doom blog.

I prefer hard copy because it’s easier on my eyes, but considering I’m getting published in electronic format I guess I better get used to it.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

    Every single time. Never fails.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

No, but I have NOT bought a book based on the cover alone. I will admit, though, that the cover of Lisa Kleypas’ Mine Till Midnight drew my attention for months until I eventually caved in and bought it.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

All the time. I have some “auto buy” authors who could have gibberish for back cover copy and I would still buy their books. For newer authors, or authors I don’t read frequently, it’s usually the back cover copy combined with the first few paragraphs that convince me to make a purchase.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Not too often. I have a handful of friends who’s opinions I trust, and who know what kind of books and voice I enjoy reading.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

No, but I have bought books you’ve mentioned simply because I was already planning on doing so.

Zero. I’m one of those weirdos who likes to own her books and show the world everything she’s ever read.

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic? Hard copy–though if I had a Kindle, I’d probably prefer electronic.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title? Of course!

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone? No. I’ll be attracted to the book sometimes based on its cover, but it needs to grip me when I check out the beginning for me to buy it.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask). Same as above re: cover. I’ll see the front, I’ll read the back, and then the next step is to read the beginning couple or so pages, to see if it engages me.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? My fiction tastes are very different from much of my family and friends, but at times (maybe five a year out of dozens of books purchased) a friend or family member will recommend a book and I’ll buy it solely on that.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!) That’s how I got onto Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls series! I saw the cover in the bookstore, and I thought, “Ooh, her agent blogged about this!” And then I did my back cover/first few pages sweep, and bought it immediately. And the next day I went back and bought the second.

How many books do you buy in a year? As said, dozens. If I had to guess…probably around fifty or so? And we must keep in mind that I have very little to spare, so if I had my way I’d buy hundreds.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? Maybe twenty. I try not to check out from the library often, because I am a flake and I forget to return it, or I get jam spilled onto it, or something else happens and it ends up being cheaper (or less of a hassle) to have bought it than borrowed it.

I work in a book store – I’ll answer for me, and, where possible from the point of view of our store.

    * Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?*
I personally prefer a hard copy.

*When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?*
Almost always. If I’m shopping at a store other than my own, I am usually looking for a title I did research on. But there is usually another on the shelf beside it that looks equally as good.

For our average reader, hand selling and add on sales are our bread and butter. Sometimes it’s enough for us to say “OH! you like Sophie Kinsella? Have you tried Emily Giffin or Laura Wisenburger?”….. another reader on the course of finding a new author.

*Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?*
For Me, Almost always. But it has a lot to do with being surrounded with books all day long, every single day. Most days something comes in that I’ve never heard of, but the cover has caught my eye. I need to read it. If it caught my eye, chances are it will catch someone else’s and I’ll need to know about it. 8 out of 10 times, I’ve liked the book… there have been those few “MEH, well, at least I tried it” books, but they are few.

*Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).*

For Me, It’s not singularly because of the back copy. But let’s face it, we don’t shelve the books with their back covers facing the world. And even if we did, the print would have to be title size to get your attention. BUT, for the sake of argument, If I am interested in the title (IE the wording and catchiness.) then I am swayed more by the back cover than the front.

For my average customer, it seems more to do with the back cover. Many people will hear us talking up a book, read the back cover and make their own decisions. Even word of mouth and personal reviews do not sway more than a back cover.

*How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?*

Hardly every a family member (though they tuned me into Harry Potter)… more often it’s my coworkers at the book store, the industry blogs and our random house rep. (who often calls us with new/hot titles to get in on the ground floor with).

*Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)*

Yes, Actually. “I’d Tell you I love you, but then I’d have to kill you.” and “Cross my heart and hope to spy.”… which, actually, I had a question about. Our buyer has asked us to shelve “Cross my heart” in our Young readers section ad ‘I’d Tell you….” in our teen section. (???) … where would YOU like to see them (my manager asked me and i was torn, but said I’d go right to the source.. hehe)

*How many books do you buy in a year?*

    HECK!!! Um.. Let’s say I buy at least 4 a week, so that’s 12 a month, so that’s over 140… YIKES!

*How many books do you check out from the library in a year?*

ZIP! I like to have my copy (and it doesn’t hurt that I work at a book store)

ACK! Sorry if this goes twice.. it kicked me back and I don’t know if the first time went through.. I’ll try once more.

  23. Fiona said:

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

Hard copy. Electronic copies hur my eyes, I can’t afford a Kindle and well… book are meant to be held, smelt, turned…

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Quite often, especially if there’s a 3 for 2 offer conning me into buying more books then I intended.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Not alone, I suppose. If I thought I wouldn’t like it, I wouldn’t buy it, but I may be more likely to buy it if I really like the cover as well.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

The blurb? Yes, quite often the majority of the time, does this effect me. What I can’t stand with some books is that the majority of it is just quotes from reviews telling me how good it is. And then they don’t actually tell you what the book is about. I do read them, but it doesn’t actually effect whether or not I buy them. In fact, if they’re too prominent, or if there’s too much of them I don’t buy it at all. I don’t need someone telling me it’s good, I can find that out for myself. The reviews/quotes are a matter of interest. Besides, you know they’ll be singing the book’s praises as what publisher is going to print “this book was terrible” on their back cover?
How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

No, I wouldn’t say I buy it because but I might be more likely to notice it if it’s been recommended, but I don’t just buy things because someone said it was good. Now if they gave me the book I’d probably read it like it or not though…

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    Nope, sorry! 🙁

How many books do you buy in a year?

Not sure, try not to count. I’d say 20-30. Last year I bought about 15 books in a month actually, but that’s rare! If I had more money I’d probably buy more.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Not many. Certainly not any more as I have a huge fine. Last year I probably checked about 3 out. But my local library is a) rubbish and b)I dislike hard backs which the majority of them are.

    Yes.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
No. “Don’t judge a book my its cover” etc. A cover gets my attention – it doesn’t keep it.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
    Yes, I have.

I haven’t seen any of the books mentioned here in my local store. Not surprised though – I live in New Zealand.

Does that include textbooks? If not, only a handful. University is expensive.

About two dozen. It depends on how hectic university and life are.

Hard copy. Nothing beats the feel of the weight of the book and the smell of ink and paper.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Almost always. My wife is amazed when I walk out of the bookstore with just a single book.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Yes. Sometimes this results in a great delight, and other times the experience is a horrific one.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

I buy based on back cover copy more frequently than off of cover art, and have had fewer disappointments.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Because of work- and school-loads, I tend to be behind the publishing curve on new releases. Most of my purchases are based on suggestions from others that have time to keep up with the latest and greatest releases.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    Not that I recall.

How many books do you buy in a year?

I buy around 20 purely fictional novels a year. I also tend to buy another 20-30 technical books each year, and some of those contain some “fiction” as well. 🙂

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

When I was younger, it would be hundreds each year. As I’ve grown older, and the Internet has become more ubiquitous, I haven’t stepped foot in a library in about 2 years. I am properly embarrassed by this fact.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
Absolutely. Most authors I pick up that I haven’t heard of are bought due to back cover copy. How will I know what it’s about otherwise?

Rarely. Family or friend often gives it to me to read if they like it.

I haven’t yet bought a book mentioned in this blog–that I am aware of.

How many a year? Based on the past year, about 30-40. (Not all new and this only includes for myself. If I include others add about another 15 or so.)

From the library–for myself about 20. For my daughter about 400. (These a picture books for preschoolers.)

A lot of the books I buy are used or discounted. 🙂

    Yes. Not often.

8.How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Currently Zero. My library is not terribly good, and its not convenient to get to, and for some odd reason, it’s not in the county system, but in some other system, which means I can’t even go to other nearby libraries. Which makes me sad.

I used to buy books based on the back cover copy all the time. A few too many disappointments and one really tight budget later I read at least a chapter or two before I slap down money for a book.

I have only rarely purchased a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation…too many disappointments…though I will check it out from the library or read a few chapters and then consider.

I have bought a book mentioned on this blog…Graffiti Girl…and I loved it!

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Often. Dido for going online to buy a book. In fact, I do it more often online so as to get free shipping.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Alone, no. As a factor, yes.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

    All the time.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

    Often.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

No, I just started reading this blog!

How many books do you buy in a year?

I don’t know. 50-100, depending on the year?

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
    YES, USUALLY.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
NO. NEVER. I MAY PICK UP A BOOK BASED ON COVER AND TITLE, BUT I BUY UNKNOWN BOOKS BASED ON THE BACK COVER COPY AND FIRST PAGES.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
FOR UNKNOWN/UNRECOMMENDED BOOKS, I ALWAYS READ BACK COVER COPY FIRST, WHICH CAN LEAD ME TO FIRST PAGES, WHICH CAN LEAD ME TO PURCHASE.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
    25% OF YEARLY PURCHASES.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
    NOT YET.

How many books do you buy in a year?

    – usually hard copy, but lately I’ve been reading more books on my Sony Reader. It’s just so convenient!

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

-Almost always. I have a hard time leaving a bookstore with just one book.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

    – Yes. Usually after seeing a book in a print ad in RT, then I order it online.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

    – That’s usually what really determines if I’ll buy an “unknown” book.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

    – A couple times, not many.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    – Don’t think so.

How many books do you buy in a year?

    – Too many to count. Over 50 I’d say.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

    – Maybe a couple dozen. I usually take my son to the library every other week and find it hard to leave without a book for myself. 🙂

    Hello Agent Kristin,

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your blog for some time now. Here are my responses to your survey.

    1. I prefer hard copy to electronic books. There’s just something about holding a book in my hands and turning pages.

    2. Yes, I frequently buy more than one book when I go to a bookstore for something specific.

    3. Yes, the cover plays a BIG part in my decision to read an author who is new to me, especially if there are kick-ass looking heroines on the covers. (That’s how I discovered Linnea Sinclair.)

    4. I don’t think I’ve bought a book based on back cover copy. For an author who is new to me, I’ll read the back cover after the front cover has caught my eye, and the back cover might convince me NOT to buy the book. But if it’s an author I already like, I’ll likely buy the book regardless of what the back cover copy says.

    5. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a book based on someone’s recommendation. I’ve borrowed books that way, but not bought one. I’m annoyingly independent (according to friends and family) and if I don’t find something for myself, I’m unlikely to pay money for it.

    6. Sorry, I have not bought any books based solely on this blog. (See answer to question number 5).

    7. I buy about 60 books a year.

    8. I do not check out library books. I like to own them and display the ones I really like in my home. (And I prefer hard cover books to paperbacks.)

    Thanks for asking,

    Lisa Iriarte

I prefer hard copy, and I prefer paperback to hardcover (trade and mass market are both good for me).

I have bought a book based on the cover alone, but that has onlyhappened once or twice.

I definitely have bought many books based on the back cover copy. This is important to me.

In the past I’ve often bought books based on recommendations, though these days it seems like I’m the one family and friends turn to for the recs instead.

I haven’t bought any books because you mentioned them, but I haven’t been reading this blog for more than a few weeks, so that could easily change. I have bought books because other blogs mentioned them.

I buy dozens of books each year. I also check out dozens of books at the library each year.

Will you compile response statistics, or talk about the response trends in a new post? I think that would be interesting.

    1. Hard copy.

    2. Yes, often, even when I go in with x amount of cash to curb my addiction. I just wind up going back to the car to get the debit card, but at least I get some exercise.

    3. No. Though I will pass on a book based on its cover, I won’t buy one because of it.

    4. Yes and no. I always read the back copy. I loves my back cover copy. However, unless it’s a bargain book and I don’t really mind taking a chance, I also read prologue, front pages, random pages in the middle and sometimes the end.

    5. I frequently buy from recommendations. My youngest son tests things to see if they are Mom safe, music, books and movies.

    6. I should be nice and lie about this, but no. However, I do have some on my wish list. This is no reflection on you, I am just in an odd reading phase right now. I do have to say I enjoy reading agent recommendations, though. I can trust them not to be horrible.

    7. 100+

    8. Not many unless they are research books. When I am in a research phase I check out 40 or 50 a month.

    Hard copy.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

At least 70% of the time when I buy one I buy multiple copies. Buy only one little book? It needs a friend!

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

I guess so but only if the back copy and a quick look at a page or two make it appear like a good choice. Now, I have definitely NOT bought, much less touch, books due to their covers. Which is probably a bad thing as I’m sure I’ve missed good titles as a result but…still.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

    Most definitely!!!

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

I tend to check out from the library other people’s recommendations…then I’ll buy a copy for myself if it was great. My family/friends don’t tend to have the same tastes and I read much more than they do.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

Linnea and the spying school one.

How many books do you buy in a year?

I’ve had to way cut back after entering non-profit world but…around 50 or so.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Gads, lots. I’m more ‘profligate’ with my reading explorations at the library. At minimum…200+. Hey, I’m single, don’t have TV, naturally fast reader…around 5 to 10 books a week is normal. Just checked…37 books checked out currently and 15 in the reserves/hold waiting on new releases or titles other people have out right now. Typical numbers. Thank god, for online renewal and title tracking!

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

    Yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Recommendations from other people are about 20% of my reading. They would be a larger percent, if I could get more recommendations.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

Oh boy, indeed. Yes. (See the bit above about me wanting more recommendations.)

    * Ally Carter’s Spy series. All of them.
    * Sherry Thomas’s Private Arrangements
    * Both of Leslie Langtry’s Bombay series
    * Marianne Mancusi’s Moondiver
    * Shanna Swendson’s Enchanted series (all of them).
    * Everything by Linnea Sinclair except Finders Keepers, which (a) I don’t think you’ve mentioned on here and (b) I can’t find in the store. I havent checked Kindle yet, though, and . . . yup. There it is. Okay. I’ve now bought everything by Linnea.
    * Hank Philippi Ryan’s Face Time.
    * Kelly Parra’s Graffiti Girl.

How many books do you buy in a year?

A conservative estimate is 200. (This is why I need more recommendations, see?) And yes, I read 95% of them.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

    0. I’m lazy and I keep forgetting to return them, and then the late fees end up eating any of the savings…. And at this point, I really do buy books to support authors, too.

But I’ll address a few things: I REFUSE to buy electronic readers when they’re SO EXPENSIVE, then the electronic books cost as much, or more, than hard copy. And, I’d check out more from the library, BUT my library — in a supposedly international city — hardly carries anything, and much of it is a language other than English. Plus their software is a throwback to the 90s.

Definitely hard copy. I won’t pay the price of a reader, and I won’t sit at my computer just to read a story.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title? Every time, unless I’m in a huge rush. Though, usually it’s more like 3 or 4 extra books.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone? I think so, but I don’t remember which one.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? Yes! A Lee Martinez’ A Nameless Witch. In fact, I didn’t even finish reading the back cover copy- I just saw “demonic duck named newt” and bought it.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? Not often. Usually, if they like it enough to recommend it, they lend it to me. If I like it, then I buy a copy along with other books by the same author.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? Not yet, but they’ve gone on my “to buy” list on my next shopping trip.

How many books do you buy in a year? Probably more than 30, plus gifts.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? None. Our library keeps horrible hours. Seriously- 9-5, and they close between 12 & 1.

    1. I guess I would say I prefer hard copy. And paperback, because it really can fit in a pocket and it’s cheaper.

    2. I think I have bought a second title at the bookstore. When I read Karin Slaughter’s first book, I want to the bookstore to get the second and thought I may as well save time and buy the third, too.

    3. I don’t think I have ever bought a book based on the back cover copy, but I do always read it. It’s the quickest way to get some kind of plot synopsis.

    4. Once or twice I have bought a book based on a recommendation. I think I shy away from that because I’m not sure what I’ll say to that friend if I hate the book.

    5. I don’t think I have ever bought a book because it was mentioned on this blog.

    6. I think I buy six or eight books a year.

    7. I probably take out ten or twelve books from the library this year.

Two points not covered in the survey…my town has a great book exchange at its recycling center and I get lots of books there. You didn’t ask if anyone has bought a book because a favorite author has blurbed it. I have, and sometimes I have been disappointed because of that.

    Thanks!

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

Oh Jeez, I’ve been wondering that myself. My favorite place to read is in the bathtub and I cannot take my laptop in there. But I like the neatness of the ebooks. Nothing to dust, no shelves that look like they’re going to collapse at any moment, no wondering if there’s a point to alphabetizing. But I can throw a paperback in my purse and take it anywhere. I can read it in the tub. I can get it signed! So the truth is, both. Though I’m saving up for an e reader and that might change once I have one.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Yes, almost always. Sometimes I actually put back the first tile to get something else. Plus we have bookstore runs, where we go to dinner and the bookstore and everyone in the family picks out a book. So technically I almost always get another book.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

No. But I have pulled it off the shelf or clicked and ad and read a sample then bought it. I’ve gotten to the point where if I’m not getting it for free (for review) then I read a sample before buying. Unless it’s a friend or an author I happen to know is an autobuy (and there are few of those).

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

Yes. But usually it’s a genre I know I like (SF/F/UF) and consider “my” genre so that I know even if I don’t like the book I’m staying up to date with what’s selling buy reading it.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Very often. That’s how I was introduced to Rachel Vincent and Anne Bishop’s work. I picked up Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dresden Files books because of the TV shows. I bought HellBlazer and HellBoy graphic novels because of the movies. I bought works by December Quinn/Stacia Kane and Ann Aguirre/Annie Dean and Brian Keene because I liked their blog styles.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

Alas, Private Arrangements is still on my wishlist because I am broke (and saving up for an e reader and a con).

How many books do you buy in a year?

I don’t know. Actually I’m keeping a list on my blog. At the beginning of the month I post books I’ve bought, downloaded and been given for reviews and why I bought them. Pass it on to the publishing industry because I’m trying to help out with that whole “What books are selling and why?” thing.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Fewer and fewer, mostly kids books. I get a lot of books for review these days and I’m running 2-3 months behind. I have so many books to read right now that there’s no point in getting more. Plus, I’ve been taking the attitude lately that it’s better to just buy it and at the very least support the author. Of course, if this money pinch keeps up past the end of the year I’ll be getting reintroduced to fostering books 😀

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask). — Yes. If the idea strikes me as unique and enjoyable, I’ll pick up a book based on cover copy. It’s rarer for me, though, because cover copy often makes the story sound uninteresting or trite (IMHO.)

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? — yes, recs are my primary source of new books. If someone else (even if I don’t know them) gives me a recommendation to read, and they give me reasons why it might appeal to me, I’m far more likely to read it than if I picked it from a shelf. Recs sway me more than cover copy—in fact, I just finished a book that I picked up based solely on my friend’s suggestion, I didn’t even read the cover copy!

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

About half the books I buy are bought on recommendations from close friends. Almost all the books I buy have at least been recommended by an acquaintance.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Novels, no, as we have very different tastes. Non-fiction, yes, but I don’t recall which.

How many books do you buy in a year?
My 3 year rolling average is around 45 a year, half fiction, half non-fiction.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
Around 100 a year, but I read less than half of them. I also read a lot of books in internet book repositories such as Project Gutenberg and Bartleby. On several occasions I’ve read a book on line then gone and bought a printed copy.

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?
    Hard, but I’ll read electronic.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
Yes. Happened just last month when I entered the store seeking Body Trauma. I ended up adding Police Procedure and Investigation and Book of Poisons to my cart as impulse buys. I half regret the police procedure one, but I’m loving the poisons! (…Should I be worried that my mom wants to read that one, too?)

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
No. But I’ll examine a book if intrigued by its cover, and I’ll shun books due to their covers, as well. Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series comes to mind for that latter catergory; if one of the excerpts I’d read online after some good word-of-mouth press hadn’t made it obvious that the main character wasn’t eager to, uh, jump into bed with anyone, I never would’ve read the books. Now, they’re among my favorites.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
Yes, when I have gift cards.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Never. Most of my friends and family members like stuff different than I do, and the only person who I know likes stuff that will interest me also has a knack for finding books with fascinating premises and plot executions that I end up pole-vaulting through or poking with a very long stick.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Not yet, but I’ve desired to. I did track down some to read ’em, though: Shanna Swendson’s Enchanted, Inc. series and Ally Carter’s (she did write this, right?) I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have to Kill You. Some others I’ve wanted to read, but my library’s fantasy/sci-fi section stinks.

How many books do you buy in a year?
Er… 4… Maybe, if you don’t count textbooks when I’m in school. And, thanks to a mother who hates fantasy and who I don’t want to antagonize as long as I live under her roof, I try to make ’em non-fiction titles.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
Not nearly as many as I’d like. Probably only about 30 or 40. My local library system tends to not carry the books I want to read. I probably borrow half again as many books from friends, too.

I prefer electronic – now I have a good reader. It used to be about even when I used a PDA, and hard copy when compared to a laptop.

I usually come out of a bookstore with a bag of books (except I mostly shop from websites now).

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone? Yes. Some books I buy off the authors name – don’t even see the cover.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? Sure – not always, but sometimes it just grabs you.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? – Usually this works the other way, people will ask me for recommendations, as they know I read a lot. But sometimes, sure.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). Yes, but I forget which. Some I’ve gone and looked for, a few I’ve remembered what you said when I came across them later.

How many books do you buy in a year? A quick check of my online purchases shows I bought 397 ebooks in the last 12 months. About 30-40 of those were novellas or short stories, but most were novels. I also bought 15-20 paper books in that time (ones I just can’t get as ebooks).

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? 25 or so. Usually authors I’ve had recommended and want to just take a quick look at to see if I like them or not.

    Hard copy.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
Almost 100% of the time, yes. I usually go to the store to buy a particular book, then I browse around.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
    No.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
Yes, but it is usually an author whose books I have read before or who has come recommended by friends.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Quite often. That’s how I get most of my recommendations, aside from randomly browsing the stacks at the library and the bookstores.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Not yet, but I’m going to buy Lisa Shearin’s series later this week.

How many books do you buy in a year?
    Maybe 50.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
    Probably anywhere from 100-150.

Hard copy. I love filling my bookshelves. I love having a physical copy to hold in my hands and electronic copy is a lot harder on my eyes.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
    Yes. I have an addiction.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
Yes. Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. I can’t think of any others off the top of my head.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
    Yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Probably averages 3-5 times a year.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Because of a blog mention, no. But I originally purchased Ally Carter’s I’d Tell You I Love You… last February because I knew she was your client.

How many books do you buy in a year?
100-200. I believe I’ve purchased about 50 so far this year.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
None. It’s part of that horrible hard copy/filling bookshelves addiction.

Hard copy. I can bring it to work, to dinner out, to read in the car when I’m not the one driving, to bed.

Back when I had a working Palm Pilot, I was a lot more inclined to read books in electronic format. But after a while, I figured out that method hurt my eyes and gave me headaches.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Usually. I’ll swing by the sections I’m interested in and browse the new stuff.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Not in years and years. Learned better.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

All the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. These days, I supplement it by scanning the opening pages to see if they grab me.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Reasonably often. Most of the time these days, my “I’d like to pick this up” list comes from either friends’ recs, Amazon’s recs, or the recs of certain review sites I read.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

Not that I can think of.

How many books do you buy in a year?

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Fewer. Library books have a deadline on them, which makes me less likely to finish them before they’re due back. (Oh God, what happened to the days when I could plow through a book in a day, two at most? Oh yes, I got a job.)

Hard copy. I have bought ebooks that have been sitting unread in my drive for years. I keep forgetting which ones they are (out of sight, out of mind, don’t remember the titles), so I’m more leery about mass purchase of ebooks these days. I have read entire (Baen) ebooks at my laptop; but if I enjoyed them that much, I usually buy a hard copy for re-reading.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? Yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Probably a couple of times a year, but I stick to the recommendations of a few specific people.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). Off The Record by Jennifer O’Connell, but there’s lots of others I want!

How many books do you buy in a year?
50-ish, I’d guess. I tend to buy them in pairs and I usually buy books every two weeks, so it probably averages to one per week.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
70 or so. There would be some crossover between what I check out from the library and what I buy – if I like a book, I want to own it.

Hard thus far, but I might change my mind if I ever manage to afford a Kindle.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
Yes, but not nearly as often as I’ve WANTED to buy a second (or third or fourth or twelfth) one. Darn college student budget….

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
Yes, but I regretted it and vowed never to do it again. =P The cover does a lot to influence which books I look at when I’m browsing, though.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
Yes, but only for fiction. For nonfiction I always read reviews and/or look through the book first. But for fiction, I’m afraid I’ll run into spoilers if I research too much before I read it.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Not too often. Maybe once or twice a year. Our tastes in books don’t overlap too much.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
Yep. The entire Enchanted, Inc. series so far and I’d Tell You I Love You (I read Cross My Heart, but I just checked it out from the library ’cause I’m too poor to buy it right now. But it’s on my “buy this if I ever have the spare cash for it” list. ^^)

How many books do you buy in a year?
Again, I’m very limited by my budget, but I probably buy around 15-20. Or it might be closer to 30 if you count textbooks.

    Um…around 50, maybe? I’ve never kept track.

    2. Ever bought a second book when looking for one? Yes.

    3. Ever bought a book based on cover alone? No. (But I’m sure I’ve passed over many many books based on cover alone — something else to think about!)

    4. Ever bought book based on back cover copy? Sure — especially because “alone” or “only” wasn’t in this question. 🙂

    5. How often bought on friend’s/family member’s rec? Often. (Although more years ago than recently.)

    6. Ever bought a Pub Rants-recommended book? Haven’t been reading the blog long enough. But don’t worry, it’s coming. Heh.

I’ve been reading a lot lately and I found that the shape of the mass paperback doesn’t really fit with the size of the other things I carried. I thought to myself that perhaps an eReader (Sony, I don’t like the shape of the Kindle) might be better/easier. Not having used it, I will abstain from that question (I suspect the vast majority of the original 82% hadn’t actually tried reading electronically).

Occasionally I’ll buy a second title, but most often I buy only what I came looking for.

The cover art will get me to pick up a book, not buy it.

The BCC is what sells me. If I pick up a book and the back sounds like it’s up my alley, I’ll give it a try. If I groan, then I know I’ll groan the whole way through so why bother?

I buy books on recommendation less than 50% of the time. Most people don’t seem to understand the nuances of the fantasy genre.

No, I haven’t bought a book on your recommendation (sorry).

I don’t buy nearly as many books as I used to. I used to buy more books than I could read, so now I’m down to a half-dozen a year until I read all the others I’ve purchased.

My library’s selection of fiction is unfortunately limited. They do have a nice collection of audiobooks of the classics. This is how I listened to Captain Blood. 🙂

No, but good back cover copy will make me open the book and read a few pages to see if I like the style before I buy. So it’s a factor.

Thanks so much for your blog! I’ve learned a lot from it. I haven’t really commented, but I thought this was a great poll.

    1. Definitely hard copy. I justify all my books by saying I’m saving them for my library when I have a house.

    2. I almost always by a second (or third or fourth) title. I don’t like seeing the bottom of my “to read” pile at home.

    3. Yes. And usually they turn out great.

    4. Yes, and that and picking out the cover, is usually how I choose my books.

    5. Yes. My family trades books back and forth too, so I’ve often read books I wouldn’t normally read. And if I like them, that usually gets me to buy more of that author or genre.

    6. Yes, and the first ones coming to mind are Ally Carter’s books.

    7. Oh…loads. I’ve bought about five or six in the past two months.

    8. None. This one relates to my first answer. I’m collecting my books so I usually buy them. I’m going to have to move into a bigger apartment soon.

Hard copy. I need to feel the book in my hands. It makes the reading a more personal experience.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

All the time, which doesn’t always bode well for my budget. 😉

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Rarely, but it has happened. I sometimes buy them for the way the paper itself feels in my hands.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

The cover draws me, then I flip the book over and read the back copy. Every time. No exceptions. But that’s just me. If the back copy interests me, I buy the book. If it doesn’t, I don’t. I don’t care how the cover grabbed my interest. Covers aren’t everything. Some of the best covers had the worst drivel between them. Even books that have been highly recommended get left behind if I don’t like the back cover copy.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Once in a while, only because most of my friends have very different reading tastes than I do.

How many books do you buy in a year?

Between 50 and 100, all paperback.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

None. I returned the Stephen Hawkins’s book! I really did. The found it six months later, but the damage had been done. *sigh* Nasty librarians, those, though they are a very small minority. I just don’t want to go through that again.

-Hard copy, because I do most of my reading at lunch, where lugging around a laptop (or hardback) isn’t practical.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?
-Only if they didn’t have my book available, and they had to order it. In that case, I say, “Well, I need SOMETHING to tide me over until then.”

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
-‘Alone’ is a strong term. While cover art does influence my buying decision (particularly if it’s atrocious), it’s only one of many factors.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
-Again, this is based on many factors, though the back cover actually has more influence with me than the front, because it tells me what the book is about.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
-My roommate and I tend to share all the books we read, and when I was a kid I started reading fantasy because my older sister did, so this happens very often, particularly if it’s a genre I like.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)
-Afraid not, sorry. I don’t tend to read the genres you recommend.

How many books do you buy in a year?
-About one a month, so 12.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
-I haven’t used a library since college. I hate being pressured to read a book in a certain amount of time.

On another note, concerning ‘cover quotes’: I have actually bought books primarily because of cover quotes. The words themselves don’t mean much, but if my favorite authors pitch a book to me through their blurbs, I will usually pick up the book.

    Oh yes, many times!

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Hmm, I don’t remember. If I have, it’s been once or twice out of almost a thousand…

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

Yes! Many times. This is what I mainly use to sum up the book and decide if I might be interested. If the back cover makes it sound interesting, then I’ll flip through it and skim a bit.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Very often. If it’s someone who I know likes the same kinds of books as I, I’ll often go and buy it even if I’ve never heard of it before.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

No, but one or two sounded interesting. If I get some spare change and more room on my Amazon wishlist, I might look up which ones and check them out.

How many books do you buy in a year?

This depends on how much spare money I have.

Typically, about 20, some of them new, and some used.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

I haven’t been to the library in a while… lately I’ve just been buying the books I want to read. I usually use the library to read a book that someone has recomened, or the back cover made it sound interesting. Lately though, I’ve got a large list of books that I’ve bought, or know I want to buy that I want to read before I check out anything new.

    – Yes. I mostly go to the bookstore to purchase a particular book, but I buy an unplanned book about 50% of the time.

    3. Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
    – No. Never. I’ve picked up a book based on the cover, but only purchase it if the back copy and (usually) first page capture my attention.

    4. Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).
    – Yes. I have never bought a book without reading the back cover copy (unless it is part of a series that I read). I also have never bought a book if the back cover copy does not catch my interest. Usually, I will skim the first few pages – if the back cover copy was interesting – before buying it.

    5. How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
    – If a book is recommended, I will definitely read the cover copy and the first few pages to see if I want it before buying. I only end up buying a book based on recommendations half the time. If I don’t think I’ll love it, I get it from the library.

    6. Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

I’d say I make additional purchases maybe a third of the time when I go looking for a specific book.

I’m swayed to LOOK at a book because of cover art, but not to buy it.

I’m often swayed by reviews, but only if I read the whole thing (a little blurb on the back cover is pretty meaningless to me).

I can remember one time when I was swayed by a cover quote (Stephen King’s on His Majesty’s Dragon).

I’m very likely to be swayed by a recommendation from a friend or family member.

HARD–BUT I’D BE WILLING TO GO ELECTRONIC IF THERE WAS A REASONABLY PRICE READER

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

    ALMOST ALWAYS.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

NO–I HAVE PICKED THE BOOK UP, BUT IF THE COVER COPY DIDN’T GRAB ME, I PUT IT BACK

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

USUALLY, THAT’S THE SELLING POINT FOR ME.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

ABSOLUTELY, EVEN IF THE COVER COPY DIDN’T SELL ME.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone? Yes. And it’s a hit or miss proposition. I found Jack Campbell that way. I also found an awful book with 0 plot that way. But when I’m in a rush I look for guns, knives, and explosions in hopes that the cover art is at least 3% accurate.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask). Yes, and been saddly disappointed. Back covers LIE!!!!

    Yes.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?
No. I’ve heard those stories about how bad cover art can kill a good story. I try not to be judgmental.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy?
    Yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?
Absolutely. Word of mouth is the thing.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!
Yes. Special Arrangement, Secret Society Girl (I’ve read two of the series) and others. Agent and Author’s blogs are good sources to find new reads.

How many books do you buy in a year?
Around 10. I don’t have a paying day job. I write full time, and I’m a full time mom, so I don’t have the funds I wish I had to buy books.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?
About three a week. My local library has a system where I can reserve new books and pick them up when it’s my turn. I buy what I can’t borrow.

Hardcopy – paperback – I never buy hardcovers, but if I do buy electronic and I like the story, I will also purchase the paperback (Kindle’s aren’t available in Canada, and they’re no good for someone who likes to read in the tub ;))

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

I’d say 95% of the time I’ll go in looking for one book and come out with three or more.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

    Never.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

If I get past the cover, I read the back cover at which point if the BCC doesn’t grab me I will make me put a book down. If I like the back cover copy I’ll turn to the first page and read it. That’s where the real decision is made.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Most times I’m looking for books based on word-of-mouth of word-of-blog recommendations from people whose opinions I respect.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    Yes.

How many books do you buy in a year?

Depends on my finances that year – anywhere from a half dozen to several dozen.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

On average I read between 100 and 300 books a year (though 300 was one very strange year), so over 80?

    1. Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

Currently hard copy. I don’t like to read on my computer (if I can help it), nor do I have the money to invest in a Kindle or Sony e-reader, though I want one.

    2. When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

I normally go in to buy one and purchase, or consider purchasing, at least two or three more on the same subject or in the same genre. As I buy a lot on Amazon.com, I often purchase four or five books in the genre or on the subject matter I am working on.

    3. Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

My all-time favorite series was initially purchased as a result of liking the cover art and for no other reason. With that said, I have been burned by buying books based solely off of the cover art.

    4. Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

Yes. I frequently buy subject specific books (e.g. history, writing, science, art) based, at least in part, on the cover copy.

    5. How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Not frequently. I am normally the one doing the recommending to people. Though, I did buy my wife the Stephanie Meyer’s series based off of someone else’s suggestion.

    6. Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

Yes. And read other blogs and joined other websites all based on your suggestions… would have to think of what books and since I am not at home and not near my bookshelves, can’t add which one(s) here.

    7. How many books do you buy in a year? I don’t know. If I had to guess, somewhere between 50 and 100 depending on the year and what kind of work I am doing and how much free time I have to read fiction as well as trade and other books.

    8. How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Depends on the year and work/school load. This year (for all of 2008) I am at 9 books checked out. I prefer to buy unless I have some indicator I may not like what I am about to read and don’t want to make the investment.

    – Yes, I have bought a second title when going into a bookstore to look for a specific book. However, I do 95% of my book-buying on-line now. It’s way more convenient for me. But I rarely buy a book on-line that I didn’t go on-line intending to buy.

    – No, I’ve never bought a book based on the back cover copy alone.

    – I very frequently buy books based on friend and family recommendations.

    – I honestly can’t recall if I’ve ever bought a book mentioned on your blog. I know I’ve written down titles of books to maybe buy that were mentioned on your blog, but unless the book is in a sub-genre I’m writing or targeting, I usually wind up not buying it. The TBR pile can only get so big before even *I* protest. 🙂

    – Yikes, I don’t want to think about how many books I buy in a year. I probably buy 5 every time I visit Amazon, which I try to only do every couple of months. So I guess I buy about 30 books a year, more or less.

    – I don’t check out books from the library. I used to check out books for research purposes, but with all the resources available on-line now, I no longer feel the need (plus, our library isn’t huge). I like to support authors by buying their books news. I buy my fav authors (usually literary) in hard cover.

Hard copy. But I don’t have an e-book reader (and until they cost closer to $100, I won’t) and don’t like to read books on the computer.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

I NEVER get out of a bookstore with fewer than 2 books. I Usually leave with 4 to 6 books. It depends on whether I buy trade-size or hardback, and how many. (I’m going to a bookstore today–it’s a major, sorta planned-ahead trip, since I don’t get into the city with “real” bookstores very often. I have two books I am specifically going to buy/look for (I know one is in release. The other one, I’m not sure if it’s out yet.) And I know I’ll leave with around 3 to 4 more. I just will. I’m an addict.)

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

No. A cover has made me pick the book up, but I don’t ever buy without checking out the back cover copy and reading at least the first page or two.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

Again–it’s part of the package deal. The back cover copy has to tempt me into opening the book and trying a page or two, but that opening page–the voice has to grab me.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Lots of times. My daughter recommended Carol Berg not too long ago, and I read about 5 of hers. Mostly, tho, I recommend to them.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

I don’t read this blog often enough… so I don’t remember the books you’ve mentioned, as opposed to books I saw on other agent blogs. (eep) I think there may be a YA or two I’d like to read, or maybe even have picked up, but I don’t remember.

How many books do you buy in a year?

Okay. I read somewhere between 250 and 300 books a year, pretty consistently. (Yeah. I know.) I keep a list on my computer–though I’m usually about 20 to 30 books behind on getting them logged in. But around that many. That does not count the re-reads and usually doesn’t count the research books or the writing books. Most of those books I buy new, though I do buy some at the UBS and check out the library. I’m going to say that I probably buy 200 new books in a year, mostly mm paperback, some trade and hardback.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Libraries can’t keep up with me. In the little Texas panhandle town where I used to live, I donated a lot of their books. But I’d say I probably check out about 30 books in a year.

Okay. I put in my comment. Now I’m going to go back and read what everybody else says. 🙂

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask). Absolutely. This plus the cover is what makes the decision for me, on actual books. On e-books, it’s the sample pages. If they hook me, I click buy.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? I don’t have that many readers in my family. I’ll occasionally buy books my friends rave about, provided they don’t recite to me every detail of what happens in the plot.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!) Not from agent blogs, but I will occasionally buy books from writer or editor blogs. I just bought the Adventure Heroine book that was mentioned on the Redlines and Deadlines blogs. When it comes to agent blogs, I figure that selling their client’s books is part of their job description, so I take those recommendations a bit less seriously.

How many books do you buy in a year? I own thousands of books. My tax accountant said that I can’t even claim my work-oriented books as a business expense, because there are too dang many of them. I probably buy about five hundred books a year. But I’ve been trying to cut down.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? About another five hundred. I’m a book-a-holic. Regular books, e-books, audio books.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title? Yes. Is it possible not to?

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone? No.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask). Absolutely, yes.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation? Based on the rec alone, almost never. But I will investigate it, and if it appeals to me, then I’ll read it.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!) This would be the same as above. Your rec warrants further investigation.

How many books do you buy in a year? Closest estimate, between 30-40. (One of my walls is a floor to ceiling bookcase.)

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? None. I am a total snob about books. I must own them. (That said, I do sell those I didn’t care for after I read them.)

    2. When I go to a book store I’m like a kid in a candy shop – a second title? Try a second, a third, a fourth…

    3. Never on cover alone, but cover definitely helps

    4. Back cover copy – definitely.

    5. Recommendation of others definitely helps – although if I pick it up and it sounds awful and the writing isn’t wowing me, I’ll pass.

    6. Yes – from the client you mentioned – Sherry Thomas. You go, Kristin!

    7. To quote Miss Snark – Dear Dog! I have to estimate this?? Maybe 50 or 60.

    8. No library. Love the library – used to work in one (shelving books), but I don’t go there for my reading material. I buy and add to my own library. I also buy hardcovers vs. paperback when I can to support writers in the beginning of their book release, AND I never buy a used book unless it’s out of print. I’m a writer and this is a hard way to make a living. I support my fellow writers anyway I can. It’s a karma thing, man…

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

Hard copy. I like to keep the books I read–even if it means constantly buying new bookshelves and some books still managing to end up in boxes in the garage. Also, I can’t see ponying up hundreds of dollars for a device to read with, on top of the cost of books. If I could get a Kindle for $30 or so, I might be interested in trying it out.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Yes. In particular, I buy anything at all that strikes my fancy if it’s on the discount rack.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Alone? No. But does the cover real me in to looking at the rest of the book? Yes. In general, I would say you can judge a book by its cover. Obviously not all the time, but certain artistic styles tend to appeal to certain types of readers. If there’s a scantily clad woman holding a bazooka on the cover of a book, I know, without looking at anything else, it’s probably not for me. If there’s some abstract art vaguely suggesting something futuristic, maybe a stylized space ship or human face, or just a realistic-looking shot of a space scene (without any lasers shooting past) then there’s a decent chance I’m in the target audience, and I’ll pick it up and read the covers.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

Absolutely. When looking at a book by someone I haven’t heard of, that’s most of what I have to go by.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

I’ve almost never bought a book based on just one person’s recommendation. I don’t believe any of my friends knows me well enough to know what kind of book is perfect for me. But when all my friends start buzzing about something, I’ll eventually give it a shot. Things I’ve discovered due to friend-buzz: Firefly, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    erm . . . sure I have! In fact . . . I’ve bought ’em all! . . . . That’s the ticket! Yeah!

    😮

How many books do you buy in a year?

I couldn’t begin to say, because I buy in huge binges and then spend months reading the stack down. Add to that the books I buy when I happen to stop by a bookstore even though I don’t need anything, or when a favorite author comes out with something new, or when I find something interesting on the discount rack. I dunno. Thirty? Forty?

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

No, though I have checked them out from the library. ENCHANTED, INC. found its way onto my reading list pretty quickly.

Last year: 11-ish, with at least six others received (and kept) as gifts, not including any books bought for school (even if I loved them so much I kept them). I usually get more (I have no self control) but I’ve recently become a poor college student and I had to change a few habits. ^_^

3&4. I pick up a book based on the cover, but the decider for purchase is usually the back cover blurb. I might dip into the first few pages too, but if the back cover blurb doesn’t get me, the store doesn’t get my money.

    5. I have looked at a book based on references from friends and family but it’s the book itself that decides me, regardless of what someone else tells me. Each and every reader is different so what one likes another will hate.

How many books do you buy in a year? Way too many. 🙁 I spent over $150 this past weekend on books, and most of them were used.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? Ah, I used to check out the maximum number per week (about 30) when I lived in CA. I hate the NY library system, plus it’s inconvenient for me in terms of travel, so I hardly check out any books now.

Wow! 189 Comments! Or maybe this happens a lot, I’m just not usually two days behind on blog reading. Oh well.

I still can’t resist giving my answers to the poll, in case anyone’s still interested.

1- Not that I can remember, due to budget reasons. I’m a VERY frugal book-buyer.

2- No. Cover will draw my eye to read the back cover or make me pass without a second thought.

3- No. After the cover, the back copy can make me pass, or make me open it up and sample the story. Only if the storytelling and the story line (based on the back copy) appeal to me, do I buy it.

4- Not that I can think of, but I’ll have the library get a book in for me based on a recommendation. Then, if I love it, I’ll go buy it to read again.

5- Well… I would have bought Private Arrangements, except I won a copy from Dear Author. I fully intend on getting my hands on Delicious one way or another.

    6- Maybe 10 or so?

    7- Maybe 40 or so?

In general, I use the library to check out new authors that I’m interested in. I actually buy only books that are either from my auto-buy authors, or are the “keeper shelf” kind of books that I’ll read over and over again (once I’ve tried them from the library or a friend and fallen in love with them). I just don’t have the bookshelf space or the money to buy books that I’ll only read once. (My “keeper shelf” currently holds 500+ books, all of which I read every other year, on average, which is why I don’t read new books as often as some. I’m too busy re-reading my favorite!)

    1 – hard copy, mainly because I don’t own an e-reader (yet…)

    2 – All the time! I can’t remember the last time I bought only a single book…

3 – I’d like to say no, but it’s the cover that makes me pick up the book in the first place and read the blurb.

4 – That’s how I find almost all of my new books that I didn’t see mentioned somewhere else already.

5 – Very rarely, but I often buy from blog recommendations

    6 – Don’t remember. >_
    7 – About 1 a week on average, so 50+ (gah!)

    8 – 100+, easily

Hard copy. Hands down. Nothing like holding a new book in your hands and smelling crisp paper.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title? Yes, all the time. Usually it’s something I never would go searching for, but which caught my fancy and seemed interesting to read.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Yes. Several times. I usually choose paperbacks to minimize the damage it the book turns out to be rotten.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy?

Yes. If it’s interesting, I’ll bite.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Rarely. I usually go get those at the library. Too many people have bad taste. lol

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

    Nope. Sorry. I’m new here.

How many books do you buy in a year?

Let’s see, On Amazon alone since this September I’ve bought about 700.00-800.00 worth of books. That doesn’t include what I’ve bought at Borders and Barnes & Nobles (maybe another 200.00) and what I buy to support my favorite writers, like Koontz,D. Preston, Lincoln Child, etc….

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

I average about 12-15 every three weeks.

I’ve got 13 stacked next to the bed right now. Only got through three though.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year? None. I decided I’d rather buy books than pay overdue fines.

How many books do you buy in a year?

A LOT! Probably between 25 and 50, depending on the year.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Not that many. When they are my favorite authors, I have to have a copy of my collection.

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?:
–I prefer hard copies. I don’t like the idea of downloading a story because of the chances of it being deleted or wiped out on the computer, and there’s also the fact that computers can run out of juice, whereas you can take a hard copy anywhere to read.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?:
–Unfortunately for my wallet, I usually do. I think I might enjoy the actual hunt for books rather than reading them (although I enjoy that, too!).

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?:
–I used to, but not so much anymore, although I admit that if I’m merely browsing, I always pick up books because I like the cover, and if I happen to like what the back cover says as well, then I buy it.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).:
    –Yes. 😀

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?:
–I don’t usually, because I don’t have many friends or family members that read as much as I do, but if someone recommends something and I like the sound of it, I’ll go pick it up. (Twilight was a recommendation, actually.)

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!):
–I’m fairly new to your blog, so no, but I did consider buying “I’d Tell You But Then I’d Have To Kill You” when I found out you were involved in it.

How many books do you buy in a year?:
–Way too many to count. I buy a lot.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?:
–Not so many. Maybe two or three. I like to collect the books I read, I like picking them up again some time later and re-reading them. I usually get something new from books every time I read through.

I hope I wasn’t too late to be considered in the poll!

Do you prefer hard copy or electronic?

Definitely hardcopy as it’s infinitely more portable and much easier to read in bed although in theory (and in some practice) I’m not against reading electronic text. I frequently read public domain texts available on the internet.

When going into a store to buy a book, have you then bought a second title?

Oh yes. Sometimes it’s a copy of something I’ve always wanted to own or am currently collecting if it’s a series, sometimes it’s something I’ve always meant to read, but most of the time it ends up being something in the same genre of the other book I’m getting just because that’s where I’m getting my browse on.

Have you bought a book based on the cover alone?

Yes, I’m a visual person (being a graphic designer) and I’ve been known to reject a book until it gets a new/prettier/better designed cover. I definitely judge books by their covers and am far less likely to pick up a new author if their series/book has crappy book covers.

Have you ever bought a book based on the back cover copy? (what the heck, let’s ask).

No, more that I’ve started reading a book because of the back copy or gone and gotten a second opinion from a friend or online because of back copy. I usually read the first chapter/section of a book at the store before I buy because I speed. I would say back copy is usually the second thing that interests me after the book cover. If the book cover’s cool or exciting, I’ll flip the book over and read the back copy. If that gets me excited, I’m probably buying it or putting it on a to read list.

How often have you bought a book based on a friend or family member’s recommendation?

Hum. Okay, probably about half because usually in my family we pass around books we like. So I don’t necessarily go out and buy the book but almost everything most people recommended to me I read.

Have you ever bought a book because I mentioned it on this blog? If so, which book(s). (oh boy!)

I haven’t had the chance to yet! I haven’t been reading long and some things I’ve already read that you have mentioned but I’m sure I will. I’m a sucker for recs.

How many books do you buy in a year?

A lot. Probably somewhere between 20 and 50 books depending on if I’m collecting a series or not. Since I read a lot of science fiction, I tend to read series without buying them until the series is finished so I don’t end up with four books of a series I end up hating.

How many books do you check out from the library in a year?

Lots. With a library about six short easy blocks from my house and a book intake rate of about a book every two to three days, I’m practically a permanent fixture.

    1. Books – Hard copy, pages to turn
    2. Almost always. It’s against the law to leave the bookstore with only one book.
    3. and 4.
I have often picked up a book I never intended to buy due to cover art. But, then I read the first page, often the back cover and then decide.
    5. Actually, not too often.
    6. New reader, so no.
    7. Not as many as I would like to buy. I’m probably down to six a year.
    8. 50 to 100
