So this morning I’m breezing through my copy of Publishers Weekly as we had just found out our author Sherry Thomas was getting a new PW review for her August release DELICIOUS (and a fab review at that!). I was pretty sure it was coming in the current issue that hasn’t hit my mailbox yet but to make sure, I scanned the latest copy.
Well, this article caught my eye. Zogby International, in conjunction with Random House, did a survey on current readership. Here’s the link if you want to read it more fully.
And here are just a few eye-popping stats from this poll.
82% of Readers prefer the hard copy of a book over the electronic version (Oy! I’m in the minority. I love reading on my Kindle.)
43% of readers go into bookstores looking for a specific title
77% of those readers make additional purchases when looking for a specific book
52% of book purchasers are swayed by cover art
49% of book purchasers are swayed by reviews
35% of book purchasers have been swayed by a cover quote (now my authors understand why we work so hard to get those cover quotes!)
60% of book purchasers are swayed by recommendations from friends or family members.
Word of mouth is everything!
Alas, I didn’t see any stats on back cover copy and whether that influences a purchase. That could have been relevant concerning all my recent blog posts regarding it.

I am in the 82%. I prefer hard copy to electronic. It’s harder to cuddle my laptop in bed.
I sometimes buy a second title after going into a bookstore for a specific item. If I’m at my discount bookstore, I *USUALLY* buy a second or third title than if I got the book at B&N and I had to pay full price.
I’ve bought a book at least once due to a cover, but I don’t think it was a good book because I haven’t done it since. Other factors must play before I purchase now.
I’ve bought MANY books due to cover copy. Though occasionally this has been misleading and I’ve now had to add the “read the first page” or “read page 69” tests to it before buying someone new.

Shamefully, none. The reason is actually simple: If I like the book, I want to own it, and I’m going to buy it anyway. If I don’t like the book, I’m either going to return it for another one, give it to a friend who might like it, or donate it to said library. Usually the latter. (This led to a stack of vampire books going to a Mormon temple’s library once, but that’s another story.)

How many books in a year–for ME, at least 24 (I know, but I’m poor and many of these books cost over $35). For the family–at least 50.
Books from the library–last semester, I had 40 books checked out at one time. That doesn’t count the ten or so books I checked out, decided I couldn’t use, then returned. Next semester should be worse (three papers to write instead of two).

I work in a book store – I’ll answer for me, and, where possible from the point of view of our store.

Almost always. If I’m shopping at a store other than my own, I am usually looking for a title I did research on. But there is usually another on the shelf beside it that looks equally as good.
For our average reader, hand selling and add on sales are our bread and butter. Sometimes it’s enough for us to say “OH! you like Sophie Kinsella? Have you tried Emily Giffin or Laura Wisenburger?”….. another reader on the course of finding a new author.

For Me, Almost always. But it has a lot to do with being surrounded with books all day long, every single day. Most days something comes in that I’ve never heard of, but the cover has caught my eye. I need to read it. If it caught my eye, chances are it will catch someone else’s and I’ll need to know about it. 8 out of 10 times, I’ve liked the book… there have been those few “MEH, well, at least I tried it” books, but they are few.

For Me, It’s not singularly because of the back copy. But let’s face it, we don’t shelve the books with their back covers facing the world. And even if we did, the print would have to be title size to get your attention. BUT, for the sake of argument, If I am interested in the title (IE the wording and catchiness.) then I am swayed more by the back cover than the front.
For my average customer, it seems more to do with the back cover. Many people will hear us talking up a book, read the back cover and make their own decisions. Even word of mouth and personal reviews do not sway more than a back cover.

The blurb? Yes, quite often the majority of the time, does this effect me. What I can’t stand with some books is that the majority of it is just quotes from reviews telling me how good it is. And then they don’t actually tell you what the book is about. I do read them, but it doesn’t actually effect whether or not I buy them. In fact, if they’re too prominent, or if there’s too much of them I don’t buy it at all. I don’t need someone telling me it’s good, I can find that out for myself. The reviews/quotes are a matter of interest. Besides, you know they’ll be singing the book’s praises as what publisher is going to print “this book was terrible” on their back cover?

About two dozen. It depends on how hectic university and life are.

Because of work- and school-loads, I tend to be behind the publishing curve on new releases. Most of my purchases are based on suggestions from others that have time to keep up with the latest and greatest releases.

When I was younger, it would be hundreds each year. As I’ve grown older, and the Internet has become more ubiquitous, I haven’t stepped foot in a library in about 2 years. I am properly embarrassed by this fact.

I have bought a second title when I went to the bookstore intending to buy just one book.
I have never bought a book based on the cover alone–covers are what first draw me towards a book at a bookstore but I never would I rely on just the cover to make my decision.
I used to buy books based on the back cover copy all the time. A few too many disappointments and one really tight budget later I read at least a chapter or two before I slap down money for a book.

1. I prefer hard copy to electronic books. There’s just something about holding a book in my hands and turning pages.
2. Yes, I frequently buy more than one book when I go to a bookstore for something specific.
3. Yes, the cover plays a BIG part in my decision to read an author who is new to me, especially if there are kick-ass looking heroines on the covers. (That’s how I discovered Linnea Sinclair.)
4. I don’t think I’ve bought a book based on back cover copy. For an author who is new to me, I’ll read the back cover after the front cover has caught my eye, and the back cover might convince me NOT to buy the book. But if it’s an author I already like, I’ll likely buy the book regardless of what the back cover copy says.
5. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a book based on someone’s recommendation. I’ve borrowed books that way, but not bought one. I’m annoyingly independent (according to friends and family) and if I don’t find something for myself, I’m unlikely to pay money for it.

But I’ll address a few things: I REFUSE to buy electronic readers when they’re SO EXPENSIVE, then the electronic books cost as much, or more, than hard copy. And, I’d check out more from the library, BUT my library — in a supposedly international city — hardly carries anything, and much of it is a language other than English. Plus their software is a throwback to the 90s.

Oh Jeez, I’ve been wondering that myself. My favorite place to read is in the bathtub and I cannot take my laptop in there. But I like the neatness of the ebooks. Nothing to dust, no shelves that look like they’re going to collapse at any moment, no wondering if there’s a point to alphabetizing. But I can throw a paperback in my purse and take it anywhere. I can read it in the tub. I can get it signed! So the truth is, both. Though I’m saving up for an e reader and that might change once I have one.

Yes, almost always. Sometimes I actually put back the first tile to get something else. Plus we have bookstore runs, where we go to dinner and the bookstore and everyone in the family picks out a book. So technically I almost always get another book.

Fewer and fewer, mostly kids books. I get a lot of books for review these days and I’m running 2-3 months behind. I have so many books to read right now that there’s no point in getting more. No. But I’ll examine a book if intrigued by its cover, and I’ll shun books due to their covers, as well. Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series comes to mind for that latter catergory; if one of the excerpts I’d read online after some good word-of-mouth press hadn’t made it obvious that the main character wasn’t eager to, uh, jump into bed with anyone, I never would’ve read the books. Now, they’re among my favorites.

Hard copy. I have bought ebooks that have been sitting unread in my drive for years. I keep forgetting which ones they are (out of sight, out of mind, don’t remember the titles), so I’m more leery about mass purchase of ebooks these days. I have read entire (Baen) ebooks at my laptop; but if I enjoyed them that much, I usually buy a hard copy for re-reading.

Maybe Games of Command, but I knew about it before you mentioned it here. Generally, it takes several recommendations from different sources before I consider a book for purchase. And even then, I’d probably look for an excerpt before deciding one way or another.

• I distrust back cover copies. I don’t recall ever buying a book just because of them.

I’ve been reading a lot lately and I found that the shape of the mass paperback doesn’t really fit with the size of the other things I carried. I thought to myself that perhaps an eReader (Sony, I don’t like the shape of the Kindle) might be better/easier. Not having used it, I will abstain from that question (I suspect the vast majority of the original 82% hadn’t actually tried reading electronically).
Occasionally I’ll buy a second title, but most often I buy only what I came looking for.
The cover art will get me to pick up a book, not buy it.
The BCC is what sells me. If I pick up a book and the back sounds like it’s up my alley, I’ll give it a try. If I groan, then I know I’ll groan the whole way through so why bother?

1. Definitely hard copy. I justify all my books by saying I’m saving them for my library when I have a house.

The cover draws me, then I flip the book over and read the back copy. Every time. No exceptions. But that’s just me. If the back copy interests me, I buy the book. If it doesn’t, I don’t. I don’t care how the cover grabbed my interest. Covers aren’t everything. Some of the best covers had the worst drivel between them. Even books that have been highly recommended get left behind if I don’t like the back cover copy.

Yes! Many times. This is what I mainly use to sum up the book and decide if I might be interested. If the back cover makes it sound interesting, then I’ll flip through it and skim a bit.

Very often. If it’s someone who I know likes the same kinds of books as I, I’ll often go and buy it even if I’ve never heard of it before.

I haven’t been to the library in a while… lately I’ve just been buying the books I want to read. I usually use the library to read a book that someone has recomened, or the back cover made it sound interesting. Lately though, I’ve got a large list of books that I’ve bought, or know I want to buy that I want to read before I check out anything new.

– Yes. I have never bought a book without reading the back cover copy (unless it is part of a series that I read). I also have never bought a book if the back cover copy does not catch my interest. Usually, I will skim the first few pages – if the back cover copy was interesting – before buying it.

– If a book is recommended, I will definitely read the cover copy and the first few pages to see if I want it before buying. I only end up buying a book based on recommendations half the time. If I don’t think I’ll love it, I get it from the library.

– No. I have read some of the books you have mentioned, but it was a coincidence.

I actually thought the 18% who prefer ebooks was really telling. We are only in the infancy of electronic books and e-readers, so don’t be discouraged, Kristin, I suspect this 18% will grow rapidly in the next 10 years.
1) I would prefer electronic if I had the money to buy a Kindle or e-reader of some kind, but right now I don’t.
2) Yes, I have walked out of a bookstore with more than just the book I was in there to buy.

I prefer hard copy. I might be a huge tech geek, but frankly any time I can spend NOT in front of an electronic screen is probably good for me.
I’m more likely to go into a bookstore to browse and wander than to look for a specific title.
I’d say I make additional purchases maybe a third of the time when I go looking for a specific book.
I’m swayed to LOOK at a book because of cover art, but not to buy it.
I’m often swayed by reviews, but only if I read the whole thing (a little blurb on the back cover is pretty meaningless to me).
I can remember one time when I was swayed by a cover quote (Stephen King’s on His Majesty’s Dragon).
I’m very likely to be swayed by a recommendation from a friend or family member.

I NEVER get out of a bookstore with fewer than 2 books. I Usually leave with 4 to 6 books. It depends on whether I buy trade-size or hardback, and how many. (I’m going to a bookstore today–it’s a major, sorta planned-ahead trip, since I don’t get into the city with “real” bookstores very often. I have two books I am specifically going to buy/look for (I know one is in release. The other one, I’m not sure if it’s out yet.) And I know I’ll leave with around 3 to 4 more. I just will. I’m an addict.)

No. A cover has made me pick the book up, but I don’t ever buy without checking out the back cover copy and reading at least the first page or two.

Again–it’s part of the package deal. The back cover copy has to tempt me into opening the book and trying a page or two, but that opening page–the voice has to grab me.

Lots of times. My daughter recommended Carol Berg not too long ago, and I read about 5 of hers. Mostly, tho, I recommend to them.

Okay. I read somewhere between 250 and 300 books a year, pretty consistently. (Yeah. I know.) I keep a list on my computer–though I’m usually about 20 to 30 books behind on getting them logged in. But around that many. That does not count the re-reads and usually doesn’t count the research books or the writing books. Most of those books I buy new, though I do buy some at the UBS and check out the library. I’m going to say that I probably buy 200 new books in a year, mostly mm paperback, some trade and hardback.

Libraries can’t keep up with me. In the little Texas panhandle town where I used to live, I donated a lot of their books. But I’d say I probably check out about 30 books in a year.

Hard copy. I like to keep the books I read–even if it means constantly buying new bookshelves and some books still managing to end up in boxes in the garage. Also, I can’t see ponying up hundreds of dollars for a device to read with, on top of the cost of books. If I could get a Kindle for $30 or so, I might be interested in trying it out.

Yes. In particular, I buy anything at all that strikes my fancy if it’s on the discount rack.

Alone? No. But does the cover real me in to looking at the rest of the book? Yes. In general, I would say you can judge a book by its cover. Obviously not all the time, but certain artistic styles tend to appeal to certain types of readers. If there’s a scantily clad woman holding a bazooka on the cover of a book, I know, without looking at anything else, it’s probably not for me. If there’s some abstract art vaguely suggesting something futuristic, maybe a stylized space ship or human face, or just a realistic-looking shot of a space scene (without any lasers shooting past) then there’s a decent chance I’m in the target audience, and I’ll pick it up and read the covers.

I still can’t resist giving my answers to the poll, in case anyone’s still interested.
1- Not that I can remember, due to budget reasons. I’m a VERY frugal book-buyer.
2- No. Cover will draw my eye to read the back cover or make me pass without a second thought.
3- No. After the cover, the back copy can make me pass, or make me open it up and sample the story. Only if the storytelling and the story line (based on the back copy) appeal to me, do I buy it.
4- Not that I can think of, but I’ll have the library get a book in for me based on a recommendation. Then, if I love it, I’ll go buy it to read again.
5- Well… I would have bought Private Arrangements, except I won a copy from Dear Author. I fully intend on getting my hands on Delicious one way or another.
6- Maybe 10 or so?

In general, I use the library to check out new authors that I’m interested in. I actually buy only books that are either from my auto-buy authors, or are the “keeper shelf” kind of books that I’ll read over and over again (once I’ve tried them from the library or a friend and fallen in love with them). I just don’t have the bookshelf space or the money to buy books that I’ll only read once. (My “keeper shelf” currently holds 500+ books, all of which I read every other year, on average, which is why I don’t read new books as often as some. I’m too busy re-reading my favorite!)

3 – I’d like to say no, but it’s the cover that makes me pick up the book in the first place and read the blurb.

Yes. Several times. I usually choose paperbacks to minimize the damage it the book turns out to be rotten.

Let’s see, On Amazon alone since this September I’ve bought about 700.00-800.00 worth of books. That doesn’t include what I’ve bought at Borders and Barnes & Nobles (maybe another 200.00) and what I buy to support my favorite writers, like Koontz,D. Preston, Lincoln Child, etc….

I average about 12-15 every three weeks.

A LOT! Probably between 25 and 50, depending on the year.

Not that many. When they are my favorite authors, I have to have a copy of my collection.

–I prefer hard copies. I don’t like the idea of downloading a story because of the chances of it being deleted or wiped out on the computer, and there’s also the fact that computers can run out of juice, whereas you can take a hard copy anywhere to read.

–Unfortunately for my wallet, I usually do. I think I might enjoy the actual hunt for books rather than reading them (although I enjoy that, too!).

–I used to, but not so much anymore, although I admit that if I’m merely browsing, I always pick up books because I like the cover, and if I happen to like what the back cover says as well, then I buy it.

–I don’t usually, because I don’t have many friends or family members that read as much as I do, but if someone recommends something and I like the sound of it, I’ll go pick it up. (Twilight was a recommendation, actually.)

–Not so many. Maybe two or three. I like to collect the books I read, I like picking them up again some time later and re-reading them. I usually get something new from books every time I read through.

Definitely hardcopy as it’s infinitely more portable and much easier to read in bed although in theory (and in some practice) I’m not against reading electronic text. I frequently read public domain texts available on the internet.

Oh yes. Sometimes it’s a copy of something I’ve always wanted to own or am currently collecting if it’s a series, sometimes it’s something I’ve always meant to read, but most of the time it ends up being something in the same genre of the other book I’m getting just because that’s where I’m getting my browse on.

Yes, I’m a visual person (being a graphic designer) and I’ve been known to reject a book until it gets a new/prettier/better designed cover. I definitely judge books by their covers and am far less likely to pick up a new author if their series/book has crappy book covers.

No, more that I’ve started reading a book because of the back copy or gone and gotten a second opinion from a friend or online because of back copy. I usually read the first chapter/section of a book at the store before I buy because I speed. I would say back copy is usually the second thing that interests me after the book cover. If the book cover’s cool or exciting, I’ll flip the book over and read the back copy. If that gets me excited, I’m probably buying it or putting it on a to read list.

Hum. Okay, probably about half because usually in my family we pass around books we like. So I don’t necessarily go out and buy the book but almost everything most people recommended to me I read.

A lot. Probably somewhere between 20 and 50 books depending on if I’m collecting a series or not. Since I read a lot of science fiction, I tend to read series without buying them until the series is finished so I don’t end up with four books of a series I end up hating.

Lots. With a library about six short easy blocks from my house and a book intake rate of about a book every two to three days, I’m practically a permanent fixture.
